Painful Bladder Syndrome: Causes, symptoms and Treatment

Interstitial cystitis is a condition that causes discomfort, pain and inflammation in the bladder wall and pelvic region. The condition is also known as painful bladder syndrome and is more commonly occur in women as compared to men. The research shows that up to 12% of women have early symptoms of painful bladder syndrome. The symptoms of bladder pain syndrome or interstitial cystitis vary from person to person but it often characterized with frequent urge to urinate after every 10-15 minutes, pressure in the bladder and pelvis. This syndrome has a profound impact on quality of life and therefore need to be treated well.



The underlying cause of painful bladder syndrome is difficult to diagnose. However, many studies show that the main cause of this syndrome is the abnormalities in the lining of the bladder. The abnormalities in the bladder can occur due to bacterial infection or may be due to some other disorder. Painful bladder syndrome is also a resultant of urinary tract infection.


The symptoms of painful bladder syndrome vary from person to some. However, some of the common syndrome includes frequent urge to urinate during day time and night, pain the suprapubic area like abdomen, pelvis, pubic bone, lower back pain and other. Women may have pain while their periods and during sexual intercourse.

Painful bladder syndrome or interstitial cystitis can become chronic if not properly diagnosed and treated. It may cause damage to the bladder wall causing stiffening of the bladder wall that may further leads to decrease in the bladder capacity. Beside that other condition like irritable bowel syndrome, Fibromyalgia, vulvodynia, allergies are common to seen in person suffering from the interstitial cystitis.

Treatment of painful bladder syndrome/interstitial cystitis can be done with dietary modifications, including physical activities and exercise. Herbal and physical bladder therapy is also used for curing the disease. Beside that, natural bladder control medication can be used for relieving bladder pain. In severe case, surgery is also done for the treatment of painful bladder syndrome.
